Swift Blocks are designed to provide a manmade nesting site to support the declining Swift population. Studies show that Swifts have declined by over 50% in the last 20 years, placing them on the amber watch list.
Swift blocks are designed to be used as an integral part of a building, in place of a standard block, as biodiversity enhancement measures.
How they work
The Swift Block is inspired by the way historically swifts have nested in the eaves, it replaces this sort of lost habitat. Each Swift block contains an inner nesting bowl and small entrance designed to deter larger birds and predators.
Swift blocks are cast from concrete using 75% waste material from the Cornish China Clay industry.
Swift Blocks should be installed in at least 5m from ground level, on a side of the building that gets shade during the day or under an overhang or the eaves. Not over windows or near to vents, and away from predator access. Situated in a spot with clear adjacent airspace to allow high-speed direct flight access. Designed to fit flush in a wall or to render up to the entrance cavity.
